Get your cultural fix this week
November is upon us, and with it comes the long-awaited Culture Week. This year, the motto of the Week is “Exchanging Cultures – Exchanging Souls” with the obvious implication of international culture sharing. But it’s not only ESN that is providing culture to exchange students. As it turns out, Zagreb is teeming with cultural manifestations this November, many of which have international elements to them.
If you are interested in culture, and have time to spare, we have a Culture To Do List just for you:
- ZAGREB FILM FESTIVAL (7. – 17.11.) - This annual Film Festival is celebrating its 17th year of existence this week and consists of various programmes (located in various city locations) with both feature-length and short films, as well as indie and well-known ones. Of course, plenty of films are in English considering it is, in essence, an international festival. So, if you are into artsy cinema, Zagreb Film Festival is for you.
- INTERLIBER (12.11. – 17.11.) – If you are more of a bookworm, you are in luck: this week, the 42nd International Book Fair is being held at the Zagreb Velesajam (Avenija Dubrovnik 15, 10020, Zagreb). It is the most famous (and most attended) book fair in the country, and rightfully so: the number of books of various genres found at the fair is simply overwhelming. The entrance is free, and there are plenty of discounts. Of course, you might find plenty of books in English, so don’t let books in Croatian scare you off.
- ZAGREB JAZZ FESTIVAL (17.11. – 25.11.) – There is also a little bit of something for music lovers out there: Zagreb is hosting the 11th Zagreb Jazz Festival this November. It will be held at various locations (such as Tvornica Kulture 17.11.) and provide you with some classic jazz, as well as some experimental tunes from international artists.
However, this is not all, as ESN is also contributing to your cultural enrichment.
The Culture Week (11. – 17. 11.) organized by ESN will consist of several events aimed at international students.
Culture Week starts on the 11th of November with an ‘Erasmus Speak Date’. It will be a fun way to learn a new language, and you will find out why by participating. The day after you shouldn’t forget to drop by for the second round of our Pub Quiz, this time appropriately named ‘Culture Edition’. The middle of the week will be marked by the ‘Croatian Event’. What is so Croatian about it, you may ask? Put on your cravat, join the event and find out.
Afterwards, the ‘Croatian Language Table’ will be held, where incoming students will have the opportunity to learn a bit of Croatian. The ‘Slavic Party’ will be organized thereafter which is a great opportunity for anyone interested in experiencing Slavic party habits.
Finally, what better way to end Culture Week than visiting a castle. A trip to Trakošćan castle and Krapina is also scheduled, so feel free to apply for the trip.
