Living
Essentials for Everyday Life in Zagreb
Transport
Public Transport
Zagreb has organized public transport ZET which includes trams and buses.
You can buy single or monthly tickets:
- Single tickets are valid for 30 minutes, cost 0,53€ and you can buy them in digital or physical form:
- For digital ticket, you need to install the mobile app Moj ZET, transfer money to the app and then you can buy the ticket upon entering a vehicle by scanning the QR code which is present by every entrance
- For physical ticket, you need to buy it at a news stand (such as Tisak or INovine) and scan it inside the vehicle, keep in mind the scanning devices are present only at the first and sometimes the last door of the vehicle (other scanning devices are only for cards)
- Monthly tickets are valid for a month, cost 11€ but the process of retrieving them is slightly more bureaucratic, as you need to prove your student status and get a card made:
- Fill a special form and get it stamped by your faculty in Zagreb
- Bring the stamped form and your photo to the ZET office
For further locations within the city you may use trains, check HŽ.
Cycling & Walking
Zagreb is becoming increasingly bike-friendly. South of the main street Ilica, cycling is common.
Many of the city’s main attractions are within walking distance from each other, especially in the city center.
Taxi, Uber & Bolt
It is fairly easy to get a ride with both Bolt and Uber, with prices depending on the current market demand and the desired distance. During rush hour the prices significantly rise.
In other areas of Croatia, these services are not as popular and may be more expensive or non-existent.
Around Croatia
Most popular means of travel to further places within Croatia other than by car is the bus. Tickets can be bought on the Zagreb Bus Terminal website or through private bus companies such as Flixbus, Arriva, Autotrans, Čazmatrans, Brioni, Samoborček and others.
Another popular option is carpooling by BlaBlaCar.
Shopping
We use EUR as currency, and cards are widely accepted in shops. Some cafes and restaurants may still only accept cash, especially in smaller towns in Croatia.
Shops usually work from 8:00 until 20:00 or 21:00. Most shops are closed on Sundays and holidays.
Many shops are present in the city center, but a larger variety is available in shopping malls with most popular being Arena Centar, City Center One West, City Center One East and Avenue Mall.
Food
Student Restaurants
There are multiple student restaurants which we call "menzas" at many faculties and student residence halls. To eat at discount student price of less than 1€ per meal, you need to have a valid student identity card which we call "iksica" provided by your faculty.
Studying
Libraries considered best for studying are the library of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the National and University Library (NSK). Student resident halls also have rooms which can be used for studying. Croatians also like to use cafes for studying, especially for group projects.
Medical Care
For any health issues you can contact the university doctor via email studamb@mef.hr.
Several pharmacies work 0-24h as well as on weekends and bank holidays:
